Electronic filing for income tax is closed; you cannot submit e-filed income tax returns until the new filing season opens in 2022. We anticipate the season will open in late January.

Good news!

We partner with the Free File Alliance to offer you more options to e-file your federal and New York State income tax returns—at no cost. We will begin adding software options for tax year 2021 at the start of the filing season.

Am I eligible to Free File?

If your 2020 income is $72,000 or less—yes, using at least one of the software providers below!

If you earned more than $72,000 in 2020, seeOther e-file optionsto learn about your electronic filing options.

Important: The income limits noted for each vendor refer to your federal adjusted gross income. Federal adjusted gross income (AGI) is defined as gross income minus adjustments to income. Gross income includes your wages, dividends, capital gains, business income, retirement distributions, as well as other income. For more information, visit the IRS at Definition of Adjusted Gross Income.

Free File testimonials

Here's what real New Yorkers have to say about Free File.

I used Free File again this year. The software had all my information saved from last year. It was even easier the second time.

- Marcela V., Bronx, NY

It took me less than an hour to complete my return using the Free File program. I saved $250 and got my refund quickly. I'll be using this software again next year.

- Veronica O., Buffalo, NY

For years, I paid someone else to do my taxes. Then I tried Free File. Now I'm kicking myself for not doing it sooner. I'll save $300 every year.

- Owen D., Albany, NY

Get ready!

For everything you'll need to choose the right software and prepare your return, see Get ready to e-file your income tax return. For additional tools, see Filing season resource center for additional filing information.

Note: Some software is available in Spanish. Look for Disponible en español after the product name.

Review eligibility criteria for each software provider before selecting a product.

The eligibility requirements for each software provider are different. If you do not meet the criteria for the software provider you choose, the software provider may charge you a fee. Please read the qualifying criteria carefully before you get started.

Remember, no matter which option is right for you, e-file is always the fastest, easiest, safest choice!

Note: If the Free File option you used last year is no longer listed, you can still e-file using one of the other options, but you will need to create an account with the new software. Remember to have a copy of last year's return available so you have all the information you need to easily e-file!
